A multi million-pound investment has upgraded power supplies at an electricity substation in Dagenham, benefiting thousands of residents for the future
UK Power Networks, which distributes electricity across London, the East and South East, has installed three new 26 tonne electricity transformers at a major substation in the Dagenham docks area. Transformers step down the power so it can be safely delivered to homes and businesses, offer scope for greater electrical capacity and will maintain reliable supplies.
The final transformer has now been carefully maneuvered into place. The first two transformers were energised in May and this one will be energised before the end of September. The £4 million investment means the capacity of the substation has almost doubled. Around 3,000 residents will have access to greater electrical capacity, with reliable power supplies, and the new transformers are also quieter.
The transformers form part of UK Power Networks’ ongoing investment programme to modernise the local electricity grid.
Mark Bacon, project manager at UK Power Networks, emphasised the long-term benefits of the initiative, and said: “This investment project will deliver long-lasting benefits in the area and support growth in demand for electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps and more low carbon technologies connecting to the electricity network.”
UK Power Networks owns and maintains the network of cables, substations and power lines that deliver electricity to approximately 20 million people across the East, London and South East of England, regardless of who sends your electricity bill. As the country’s biggest electricity distributor, it has invested £8.9 billion in its electricity networks since 2011.
