Attention is shifting to the idea that changing people’s electricity usage habits could help the South African electricity grid cope with the way variable renewable energy sources are affecting grid stability.
While opening the Windaba 2026 conference, Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa pointed out the need to create peak load demand now that so many SSEG systems are drawing on solar power to decrease how much demand commercial and industrial users draw from the grid during the day.
Even as the grid demand profile changes very quickly, overall trends in the country energy market are much slower to change and the transmission rollout is not moving any faster.
