As more UK homes go electric, a new innovation is quietly working behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly.
More low-carbon technologies on the network mean energy use is constantly changing throughout the day as people use heat pumps and charge electric cars at home. Even small shifts in voltage can influence how these technologies perform.
Through its ‘NExT’ project, delivered in partnership with Third Equation, UK Power Networks is installing a breakthrough device at targeted locations to safely manage greater demand and improve reliability.
At the heart of the innovation is a Network Exchanger (NEx), that upgrades existing transformers to balance loads and stabilise voltage across different ‘phases’ of cables. The technology manages each phase independently. This means it can fine-tune voltage levels at all times, balance loads more effectively and respond instantly to changing conditions on the network.
The first part of the project will focus on building and testing the Network Exchanger units, as well as preparing trial locations. The second phase will then see five NEx units installed at carefully chosen substations and monitored.
These trials will test how effectively the technology can increase energy capacity, enhance power quality and extend the lifespan of existing infrastructure. Early expectations suggest it could boost capacity by up to 20%, making space for more customers to connect without the need to build new electricity infrastructure.
The project is also exploring how easily the technology can be used at scale. By retro-fitting existing transformers rather than replacing them, NExT offers a smart, cost-effective way to upgrade the grid.
