Rivoningo Mnisi, Group Executive for Eskom Renewables, explains how he sees the relationship between South Africa’s electricity utility and the country’s commercial and industrial (C&I) sector evolving over the next few years.
He sees the relationship as quite symbiotic: “Both our futures lie in how we integrate renewables into our different corporates.
“It is clear technology has shifted drastically towards renewables. The need for security of supply for the C&I sector and the fact that the cost of energy is becoming quite critical for the C&I sector, brings the two together for innovation and ways of making sure that we provide clean energy to the commercial sector.
“If you look the future, the future is around green products. The best way to actually have green products, be it green steel, be it green export, is really making sure that your input is green,” said Mnisi.
He also expands on South Africa’s work on integration of renewables into the country’s electricity grid, the uptake of battery storage and how that affects solar uptake and his attendance at the C&I Energy+Storage Summit Johannesburg.
