ESI Africa Editor-in-Chief Nicolette Pombo-van Zyl talks about three noteworthy points she learned about energy efficiency at the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) Africa conference.
- Firstly, that the cheapest kilowatt hour is the one you never use,
- Secondly, we have to stop working in silos, and
- Thirdly, the greatest route to sustainability and accountability is measurement and verification (M&V).
Various speakers at the conference mentioned projects that bear out the National Cleaner Production Centre of South Africa (NCPC-SA) reporting 6.5TWh of savings across more than 450 companies. “That’s about R5.3 billion saved and 6.4 million tons of emission avoided,” said Pombo-van Zyl.
She talks about the effects of energy efficiency and the skills transfer needed to bring efficiency expertise into planning because decisions are locked in.
