ESI Africa spoke with Oghosa Erhahon, the Policy and Markets Manager at the Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Council, to capture exactly how this technology addresses the intermittency of renewable energy.
To start our conversation, what is the basic definition of LDES?
It is anything with an eight hour- plus storage duration. LDES unlocks major cost savings for power and energy systems, improve the economics of renewables, and ensure that every megawatt of clean energy goes further.
In practical terms, LDES means being able to respond quickly when supply and demand shift, maintaining system strengths, and ensuring renewable power doesn’t affect our power grid systems through changes in weather variability or climate-driven disruptions.

How can regulatory shifts unlock the value of energy storage?
As more markets explore how their existing market structures don’t work for them, it provides an opportunity to start rewarding energy storage systems that deliver flexibility, reliability and system services when needed.
