A Milton Keynes business owner is proving the power of community support, drawing on his own journey from teenage boxer to company director.
Callum Biscoe, owner of C&B Electrical Contractors Ltd, is sponsoring Bletchley Boxing Club’s upcoming international tournament. He says the initiatives not only provide vital funding but also reflect the life-changing opportunities he once received as a young member of the boxing club:
“When 19 young boxers fly out to Gothenburg for an annual knockout competition later this year, it will be a personal moment of pride because not only will my company be sponsoring the event, but the trip will bring back memories of the day I first walked through the doors of Bletchley boxing club.”
At 17, Callum says walking into Bletchley Boxing Club changed the course of his life, giving him purpose, discipline and the drive that would eventually lead him to run his own business:
“I was, quite simply, a 17-year-old with low self-esteem and lack of purpose but I was to learn first hand that with the right mentors and the right path, success can be achieved. I started to dream big and realised a simple truism; you only get out of life what you put in.
“Bletchley Boxing Club provided me with discipline, determination and drive, setting me on a path that eventually led me to start my own company. Being taught to respect others while staying humble was also a good life lesson. If I hadn’t found Bletchley and boxing, I could just as easily have fallen in with the wrong crowd and settled for a life of underachievement.
“I say all this not to big myself up but to illustrate what led to a lifelong commitment to my Milton Keynes community and how rewarding that can be. I’m living proof that the work of local organisations such as Bletchley Boxing Club really does change lives.”
Discipline, dedication and training
That belief in the power of boxing to build confidence was on display at a recent amateur event at the Hotel La Tour in Milton Keynes. Sponsored by C&B Electrical, the showcase featured youngsters aged 10 to 21, and as each stepped into the ring, their self-assurance was unmistakable.
Reflecting on the event, Callum said: “That confidence doesn’t just arrive packaged in the post; it must be earned through a regime of discipline, dedication and training. They are the qualities that will hopefully give those youngsters the tools they need to thrive in whichever profession they decide to enter.”
By sponsoring events like these, Callum says the greatest reward is seeing young people flourish: “I never forget though that while money is a helpful tool, the real work is done by the club’s amazing staff. I’m just a small piece of the enabling process and a willing partner in that process.”
Backing local healthcare
Callum’s community support will soon extend to healthcare. On October 17, Milton Keynes Hospital Charity will hold a masquerade ball at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Bletchley, with C&B Electrical as lead sponsor. The event will raise funds for a new radiotherapy centre and £500,000 Wellbeing Hub for patients and families undergoing cancer treatment.
Callum says: “Partnership & collaboration is the key in business, being there for one another in whatever capacity. And that’s what I believe every local business should be aiming for when considering their local community.
“A boxing club and hospital charity. Two very different worlds but with one thing in common; without sponsorship, they would both face an uphill struggle to raise funds and that’s why local businesses should step in.”
